SIMmersion training systems have several unique features that distinguish them from all other training programs currently available on the market.

SIMmersion simulations use non-branching logic. This patented PeopleSIM technology allows users to control the conversation by talking about almost anything at any time within the context of the conversation, leading to a unique experience with each play. Users gain higher cognitive skills by constantly evaluating what to say next. They can practice reading verbal and nonverbal cues, saying the right thing, learning a new strategy, and rebounding from mistakes.

SIMmersion characters remember details and portray genuine emotions that evolve along with the conversation. Positive choices by the user may make the character become more open and approachable, whereas negative choices may move the character to become sad, angry, or withdrawn.
Characters are different every time the user talks with them. Characters are unpredictable and engaging, with a range of personality types. They may be domineering in one conversation, warm in another, and deceptive in a third.

SIMmersion simulated conversations are designed to be played multiple times. Conversations can last a few minutes or over an hour. For instance, a successful border checkpoint interview should be brief, while a criminal investigative interview may take a significant amount of time. Users will never have the same experience twice, encouraging repeated practice.

SIMmersion training gives users the chance to become comfortable saying the right thing and the opportunity to learn from their mistakes without embarrassment or consequences. Practicing concepts in a safe environment is crucial since mistakes made on the job can result in poor outcomes, lawsuits, or even lives lost. Talking to the character and receiving extensive feedback allows users to prepare for what was previously unexpected and improve with each conversation.
Users can talk to the characters with a computer microphone. Their speech is recorded, allowing users to hear their own tone of voice when they review their conversations.
Role-plays can be valuable tools for practicing complex conversation skills. However, they also pose problems for learning. In traditional role-plays, students often practice with other novices, receive inconsistent feedback, and have limited opportunities for additional practice. SIMmersion stand-alone training systems combine traditional classroom instruction with virtual role-plays that are carefully designed to reinforce the training concepts and provide appropriate, detailed, and consistent feedback.

Other computer-based simulations use branching logic, where a user picks from a few statements, and the computer has one response for each user choice. The branching structure limits the user to few exchanges. The training becomes predictable, unrealistic, and disengaging—more like a multiple choice test than a challenging interaction.
Similarly, other simulations use computer-based avatars with a synthetic voice. Avatars can be tools to train people what to say, but they fail to provide the realism and nuances of human behavior.
With SIMmersion non-branching logic, the conversational flow is controlled by both the users and the characters. With many available choices, and with 150 or more exchanges in a given conversation, users must think about what they want to say and when they want to say it. Characters behave realistically, but unpredictably, so that users learn generalized skills in order to respond properly to a variety of situations.
