Helping the Medical Community Save Lives
In the healthcare realm, a mistake can mean life or death. That's why SIMmersion
is dedicated to developing the best technology for training healthcare professionals
to better assess and interact with their patients. SIMmersion simulations have helped
train physicians to screen patients for possible alcohol abuse and potential suicide
risks. Simulated patients give doctors the chance to practice applying their knowledge
and learn to better assess patient conditions in real life. The ability to practice
making an accurate diagnosis is priceless, especially when it helps doctors make correct
decisions that save lives.
Applications of SIMmersion Technology
Differential Diagnosis
US Army Medical Research and Materiel Command sought to boost educational efforts to
improve the ability of health care providers to effectively diagnose patients exposed
to bioterrorist agents and to help reduce bioterrorism-related casualties.
Alcohol Screening and Brief Intervention Findings by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services document that clinicians play a pivotal role in advising and motivating change in patients' alcohol consumption. To help train clinicians to accurately assess patients' risk of alcohol addiction, SIMmersion created Christy Johnson™. Christy may be at low-risk, at-risk, or a problem drinker. Health practitioners can perform an alcohol screening (including questions from the AUDIT), practice patient-centered communication, observe verbal and nonverbal cues to assess drinking habits, and learn to properly perform brief intervention if necessary.
Suicide Risk Screening Billy Parker™ is an Army soldier coping with the stresses of his professional and personal life. He may be depressed, or he may be at low, moderate, or high risk for suicide. Army Chaplains use the simulation to talk to Billy and learn to effectively assess suicide risks and provide appropriate support for real soldiers.
Sexual Assault Counseling Military sexual assault victim advocates can talk to Angela Lopez™ and John Taylor™ about their traumatic sexual assault experiences. Both characters have varying desires to prosecute their attacker and different needs for support and medical care. The victim advocate must advise Angela or John of their options while avoiding inappropriate, unprofessional, or insensitive language.
Motivational Interviewing Health practitioners will be able to speak with Jack Grant™ to practice motivating their ambivalent patients to make important life changes. Motivational interviewing is an intervention for substance abuse with substantial empirical evidence to indicate particular usefulness with individuals who are ambivalent about changing.
Social Skills Training
SIMmersion is developing a simulated character to help individuals with Autism
Spectrum Disorder practice conversation skills in the hopes of improving
employability and quality of life. Adults and adolescents can practice
identifying and responding to complex social cues such as tone of voice,
body language, and idioms when they speak to Sam Martin™.
