Researchers from Duke, Northwestern, and Miami conducted a sweeping meta-study, where they reviewed and synthesized 670 journal articles to address the question, "What are the features and uses of high-fidelity medical simulations that lead to most effective learning?" Read the meta-study. Issenberg, et. al. concluded that high-fidelity simulations facilitate learning under the right conditions:

Providing feedback during the learning experience check
Instant and user-driven feedback is provided during each simulated conversation. Learn more about SIMmersion feedback.
Repetitive practice of skills ensures (clinical) variation check
The simulation characters' variations in personality types, motivations, and agendas create highly-engaging simulations. This allows users to practice repeatedly and build generalized skills from mastering different types of conversations.
Curriculum integration of simulations check
SIMmersion training systems have been used as essential parts of curricula as compulsory coursework, extended training, and as an evaluative tool.
Practice with increasing levels of difficulty (if available) check
The variation of personality types for characters and the user's ability to receive help allow users to gain confidence through mastering progressively harder conversations. Some systems have actual levels of difficulty for users.
Complement multiple learning strategies check
SIMmersion's three-pronged training model allows users to learn through interactive e-learning, within the simulated conversation, and assessment, feedback, and review. Learn more about the SIMmersion training model.
Learning in a controlled environment check
Provide individualized learning check
Have clearly defined outcomes and benchmarks check
Realistic, computer-based training that is objective and standard, with stated and assessed conversational goals, provide users the ability to learn in an environment that feels high-stakes, but is consequence-free.
Ensure the simulator is a valid learning tool check
SIMmersion simulations have been proven to be vaild, and we encourage further study of our training systems. Read some of the studies on SIMmersion:
