When applying for a job, it is difficult to know exactly what to say and do. How can you persuade someone to hire you while making sure that your needs are also met? This can be especially difficult if you have been out of the workforce to deal with personal issues. When it is your livelihood at stake, can you afford to be nervous and unsure during the job interview?
SIMmersion, in collaboration with Dr. Morris Bell of Vocational Dynamics LLC, meets these conversational needs with a prototype Vocational Rehabilitation
training system. In this simulation, you will practice job interviewing skills in a safe, consequence-free environment and prepare for some of the common problems people encounter during job interviews. Last week, you filled out an online application to work at Wondersmart, a large department store chain that is opening a new store in your area and hiring new associates. You received a call from the local human resources representative, Molly Porter, who wants to hire qualified individuals to work 25-30 hours/week and requests a meeting with you today. She tells you that she is interested in hiring cashiers, customer service representatives, stock clerks, and inventory personnel.
To have a successful interview, you must develop a positive and productive relationship with Molly, learn more about the job, inform Molly about your strengths as a worker, negotiate the best terms for your employment, and leave feeling good about what you did in the interview. In this scenario, you must also negotiate to keep your standing appointment with a doctor every Thursday afternoon in an appropriate manner. This conversation allows you to talk about your work experience, education, volunteer work, military background, and strengths as an employee. With this Vocational Rehabilitation
training system, you can learn how to make the interview work for you to get the results you want.
SIMmersion is currently developing a full training system to help a wider range of people learn and practice interview skills. It will benefit groups including Armed Service veterans, individuals who have missed work due to serious injuries or mental illness, those transitioning from school to the workforce, and ex-offenders, among others. It will be available for purchase Fall 2012.
