The Motivational Interviewing Training System is designed to teach, reinforce, and refresh MI techniques for healthcare providers with clients who engage in risky behaviors. Through a simulated conversation with Jack, users will be able to talk to him about how he perceives advantages and disadvantages of cocaine, as well as his feelings about his wife, son, and other relationships, his work life, his social life, and other topics that enter into Jack’s mind if MI techniques are properly used. Jack behaves differently in every conversation based on his willingness to change, reasons for using, and reasons to consider stopping his cocaine use.
Users will further their understanding of a MI approach by developing a collaborative and supportive relationship with Jack. They will practice skills inherent to MI to evoke change talk, including proper use of simple and complex reflections and open and closed questions. Jack is an engaging character who will react realistically to users’ questions and statements, allowing users to accurately reflect what is on Jack’s mind. Proper use of MI techniques will lead Jack to increase his use of change talk, and he may even help him decide to stop using cocaine altogether. Users receive real-time support and feedback from an on-screen coach and a quantitative and qualitative post-conversation assessment based on their application of MI philosophy. After playing this training system, users will be better able to use MI with their clients.
